Tarifa almost doesn’t even look like Spain. The typical terrain of miles and miles of olive trees and sun-scorched land that you see along the motorways or the slightly pebbly beaches of the Costa del Sol just don’t bare even a slight similarity to what is to be discovered in Tarifa.

I had been keeping an eye out for Manchester-Genoa flights for a little while but they don't seem to start until mid summer. The reason I wanted flights to Genoa was not to see the city as such but to head on to the pretty towns along the Italian Riviera.

I had wanted to stay on the Ligurian coast for access to either the Cinque Terre or the Italian Riviera but knew nothing about it and certainly not where would be best to stay.

Whilst staying in Lavagna, my next stop along the Italian Riviera would be the neighbouring town of Santa Margherita Ligure, just a 15 minute train journey away. You could also fly into Genoa airport from abroad (I flew into Bergamo and got the train to Genoa before heading to SML).
